Breaking a few style rules can liven up an outfit

New Year’s resolutions are good business. Sobriety. Appropriation. This time of year, it’s all about cooking healthy root vegetable dishes in batches and rinsing plates before putting them in the dishwasher, then flossing before bed. He is hardworking and well mannered, but no, you’ll be happy to hear, in fashion. This is the perfect time to break a few rules.

I actually believe that breaking one so-called style rule every day is the key to a modern look. I don’t mean rough. I mean include one thing in your look that introduces an element of surprise. We follow the rules without even realizing it: what colors go together, what is appropriate for your age, what cut is expected in the office, which earrings are a bit fancy in the supermarket.

Deliberately disregarding only one law when dressing is a visual wink, sideways glance at the camera, which acts like a friendly email signature. He brings a spark of life and humanity to the silhouette you cut out as you walk down the street, and he cheers for all of us.

At the Chanel show in Paris last year, the models wore hiking socks with a slipper and it looked perfect

This is especially important this time of year when practical ways of keeping warm keep our outfits the same and clichéd. Summer, of course, is a bit more fanciful – sunglasses in the hair, flowy dresses, brightly painted toenails in sandals – but January is a sea of \u200b\u200bblack puffer jackets and sturdy block boots or sneakers and countless dark jeans, all with exactly the same bulge for the phone in the back right pocket.

A little conscious effort can make a big difference. Take socks. Smart pants with a strong accent or a sneaker is an attractive, practical pairing for winter, but it won’t make your heart sing. An unexpected pair of socks – bright red or shiny wool – will lift your spirits. The key is to make sure it looks on purpose and not as if you don’t realize your socks are showing: choose a good quality pair and consider polishing your boots and/or rolling up your trouser legs an inch. Small thing, huge difference. Unexpected socks are also fun in evening wear. At last year’s Chanel show in Paris, the models wore chunky bulge hiking socks and heeled sandals, and they looked perfect.

Breaking the rules of style does not mean a flashy look. The combination of navy blue and black is a traditional no-no, but it is actually very elegant: a navy blue knit under a black suit or a navy blue dress with black tights looks minimalist, but not boring. I also think navy blue with black is a bit French, although I can’t prove it to you. Gray with a camel—for example, a camel-colored knit sweater paired with gray slim-fitting trousers—is chic, professional, and a little Italian.

I am always amazed at the power that the rule against mixing gold and silver jewelry has over seemingly freethinkers. (Fun fact: Kate Moss once told me that’s the only rule she sticks to.) But there’s no reason not to break it – in fact, since few people do, wearing gold and silver together is an easy way to look your best. maverick without, you know, going all out in a purple hat or brightly colored tights.

You can adjust the rule bending capabilities to your liking. After all, enhancing those tastes is exactly what you want to take care of. So if you like wearing stripes, try wearing two stripes together: for example, a striped sweater tied around the shoulders over a striped shirt. If you enjoy the leopard print, treat it as neutral and wear it every day.

Choose a rule – any rule – and break it. The choice is yours. And tomorrow you can change your mind. If only all New Year’s resolutions were this fun.
