Courtney Love claimed she was fired from her job Fight Club because she wouldn’t let Brad Pitt play her late husband, Kurt Cobain.
Pitt, Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter star in David Fincher’s cult thriller Fight Club (1999)
During the last episode of the program WTF with Mark Maron podcast Love claimed she was originally cast as Marla, the character eventually played by Bonham Carter.
Love told host Marc Maron that she had been fired Fight Club after she “gone nuclear” on Pitt and film director Gus Van Sant when they approached her about making a film about Cobain.
Love married the Nirvana frontman in 1992. Cobain died at the age of 27 two years later in 1994. The couple had one child together, Frances Bean Cobain, who is now 30.
“I wouldn’t let Brad play Kurt,” the Hole frontwoman said. “I was nuclear. I’m not doing Faust. Who the fuck do you think you are?
Love recalled the details of their alleged conversation, stating that she told Pitt, “I don’t know if I trust you, and I don’t know if your movies are for-profit. They’re really good social justice movies, but… if you don’t get me, you kind of don’t get Kurt, and I don’t get that, Brad.”
She explained that their alleged discussion was not about the 2005 Van Sant film Last daysinspired by Cobain.
Love claimed she was told after the meeting that she had been fired from the film. She said Norton was the first to break the news to her.

“She’s starting to sob,” Love stated. “He was like, ‘I have no power! She apparently got a call from Fincher confirming that she would no longer be playing Marla.
A source close to the film said Independent: “Almost 25 years ago, Courtney Love auditioned for a role in a movie Fight Club, a role she was never offered at any point. You can’t be fired for a job you didn’t get. It is well known that the roles are not decided by other actors, but by the director.
Love claimed she once again declined Pitt’s proposed Cobain biopic in 2020.
Love said she wasn’t totally against the idea of making a film about Cobain, just that she thinks she wants to do it with someone else.
“My friend Cameron Crowe [told me] Brad Pitt was sent to this earth to haunt you for Kurt, which has been going on since 1996,” she said.
Independent contacted a representative from both Pitt and Fincher for comment.
