A California doctor accused of deliberately driving his Tesla 250 feet off a cliff with his family inside has had nine police visits to his home since 2017.
Calls to Dharmesha A Patel’s home in Pasadena were for suspicious calls and burglar alarms, Los Angeles Times reported, citing records from the Pasadena Police Department.
a Pasadena City spokesman said Independent the incidents were considered false positives. None was intended for domestic riots, L.A. Times recorded.
“There have been several false positives after panic alarms have been triggered at home,” the spokesman said, and there have never been any calls of domestic violence.
Patel, 42, was arrested on charges of attempted murder and child abuse after authorities said he deliberately drove his Model Y electric vehicle off a cliff with his wife Neha, their four-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter inside. All four survived the crash.
California Highway Patrol investigators decided that “deliberate action” was the probable cause, but investigators have yet to announce any motive for the incident.
Mr. Patel, a radiologist at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in the Mission Hills area of Los Angeles, remains in the hospital with the rest of his family.
Neighbors in Pasadena’s Patel neighborhood said Los Angeles times that the family had seemed “idyllic” before the harrowing incident on January 2.
“It’s a beautiful, idyllic family with no problems whatsoever,” said Roger Newmark, who has lived there for over 40 years. “It’s so weird because he’s a great guy. Maybe it was a moment of madness.”
Meanwhile, surveillance footage taken at Mr Newmark’s home on Christmas Eve showed Mr Patel delivering Christmas poinsettia to his neighbors who were not there.
In the footage from the Ring camera, he is seen leaving the factory and a Christmas card with a relative who was looking after the house.
“I am Dharmesh,” he said to the woman, telling her that he lived next door and pointing to his house where a white Model Y was parked in front of the garage.
“Can I just leave it (the plant) at the front door?”
