Hollywood’s biggest stars are gearing up for the 2023 Golden Globes as awards season finally kicks off.

The televised and film ceremony, which is a major precursor to the Oscars, is broadcast for the first time since 2021, following last year’s boycott.

Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s event.

When are the Golden Globes 2023?

The Golden Globes 2023 will begin on January 11 at 1:00 GMT. Comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host the awards ceremony live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

UK viewers can watch the Golden Globes via NBC’s Peacock streaming service, which is available via Sky and NOW.

What happened last year?

Last year’s Golden Gloves were held behind closed doors after their organizing body, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), drew heavy criticism for its lack of black members.

Due to the controversy, NBC declined to broadcast the awards ceremony, meaning the winners were only announced online.

But he agreed to show the event this year after the HFPA promised to do more to diversify its voting pool.

Who is nominated?

Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin leads the year with eight nominations.

Everything Everywhere All At Once’s multiverse theme has six nods, while Babylon and Steven Spielberg’s epic period drama The Fabelmans has five.

Several British actors are nominated for major awards, including Daniel Craig (“The Glass Onion”), Dame Emma Thompson (“Good Luck, Leo Grande”) and Olivia Colman (“Empire of Light”).

Other homegrown stars looking to play gong include Bill Nighy (Living), Lesley Manville (Mrs Harris Goes to Paris), Carey Mulligan (She Said), Eddie Redmayne (The Good Nurse) and Ralph Fiennes (The Menu).

Brendan Fraser has a good chance of winning for his role in the psychological drama The Whale, which marks his long-awaited return to Hollywood.

However, he will boycott the ceremony after claiming he was sexually assaulted by former HFPA president Philip Berk in 2003. Berk denied any wrongdoing.

Top Gun: Maverick star Tom Cruise is also expected to downplay the event, after returning his three Golden Globes in protest against the HFPA in 2021.

No female director was nominated for Best Director, while James Cameron (Avatar: The Way of Water), Steven Spielberg (The Fablemans) and Baz Luhrmann (Elvis) received nominations.

Taylor Swift takes on fellow pop stars Rihanna and Lady Gaga after being nominated for Best Original Song.

Comedy legend Eddie Murphy and Glee creator Ryan Murphy will receive honorary awards.

In the television categories, American sitcom Abbott Elementary leads the way with five nominations, while there are four nominations for The Crown, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Only Murders in the Building, Pam & Tommy and The White Lotus.

Who will give the prizes?

Awards will be presented by stars including Quentin Tarantino, Jamie Lee Curtis and Jenna Ortega.

Ana De Armas, who is nominated for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in Blonde, is also part of the presenting lineup.

Other celebrities serving as hosts include Letitia Wright, Jennifer Coolidge, Jennifer Hudson, Salma Hayek, Hilary Swank and Natasha Lyonne.

The ceremony will be attended by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, who will deliver a special message of peace.

The former actor’s video message will be introduced by Sean Penn, who is filming a documentary about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
