After a few years of social restrictions related to the pandemic, we were a bit thirsty for great celebrity style – but 2022 more than made up for it. With fashion week and awards season back on their usual schedule, we got to enjoy celebrity fashion and it really felt like the A-lists and their styling teams were making up for lost time.
Whether they were poking around the archives for a nostalgic red carpet moment, nailing a tricky theme, or just making an everyday outfit look effortlessly chic, the world’s most stylish celebrities were here to entertain and inspire us with their impeccable wardrobes .
Below, in no particular order, we round up our 10 best-dressed women of 2022.
Ever since she first set foot in the White House, Michelle Obama has been praised for her style and has been seen by many as an inspiration to master dress codes, uplift budding designers and perfect workplace dress code. However, this year we saw a different side of Obama, one where she was able to adopt a more casual (and dare we say “cooler”) look.
The former First Lady made multiple public appearances in the latter half of 2022 to promote her new book The Light We Carry – and we’ve seen her dress in a much more fashionable wardrobe than she’s done in the past.
From double jeans to head-to-toe leather, so many sequins and even sportswear, Obama has taken her wardrobe on a new path, away from the rigid dress codes of politics and towards a more comfortable and casual way of dressing. She wore Ganni, Balmain, Brandon Maxwell, and even animal print Versace. She seemed to be playing with fashion more than ever before, and that suited her.
There is always at least one red carpet star every year, and in 2022 it was undoubtedly Taylor Russell. The Canadian actress, who starred in one of the most talked about films of the year, Bones and All, opposite Timothy Chalamet, used her promotional tour to appear on the fashion map.
Apparently not afraid to take any risks on the red carpet, Russell has embraced the bold and fashionable silhouettes of brands such as Schiaparelli, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen and Loewe. In many ways, she is a breath of fresh air for Hollywood, eager to step outside her comfort zone and embrace some of the hottest trends of the season. This has made her one of the most exciting faces to watch on the red carpet, and we’re sure this is only the beginning.
When it comes to casual street style, Hailey Bieber has long built her reputation as one of the most influential names. The model – who has also inspired countless beauty trends this year – carved a niche when it comes to street style, often reaching for a subdued color palette, expert tailoring and perfectly polished aesthetics. In 2022, with a new stylist on board, she enhanced her uniform and brought it to the red carpet with great success.
In short, the model – who is now headed by stylist Karla Welch – has enriched her wardrobe. She began to prefer minimalism in her evening wear, opting for tight-fitting dresses from designers such as Saint Laurent. She cares about low sophistication and it works for her.
One could argue that the Venice Film Festival had its most successful year to date, making headlines – at least in terms of fashion. This was largely down to stars like Tessa Thompson and Jodie Turner-Smith (more on her later), who created some of the biggest – and most unexpected – red carpet moments of the year; the first in the dramatic Elie Saab, the chubby Marc Jacobs and the sculptural Armani Privé.
But it wasn’t just in Venice that Thompson shone. To promote Westworld and Thor: Love and Thunder, the actress appeared in a number of memorable looks, including a flowing cut-out dress by Armani and a completely transparent long gold dress by emerging brand Interior.
Huge credit goes to Thompson and her stylists Wayman Deon and Micah McDonald for creating one of 2022’s most exciting red carpet looks.
Some actresses clearly enjoy dressing for the red carpet, and Anya Taylor-Joy is one of the best examples of this right now. Whether she’s attending awards shows, sitting front row at fashion week, or at a movie premiere, she never sticks to a simple fashion formula and always goes for the full look, which is what makes her so much fun to watch.
This year, Taylor-Joy played with her personal style, adopting different aesthetics for different events. We’ve seen her team don a black veil and a sheer Dior ball gown, dare to wear giant Schiaparelli wedge heels, embrace latex in Alexander McQueen boots, and even star in a giant Dior skirt. Very few could take off all these outfits.
Anne Hathaway is not new to the Hollywood scene, but in 2022 she experienced something of a fashion renaissance that delighted her fans. While much of the internet compared it to Andy Sachs’ makeover of her Devil Wears Prada character, it was actually much more subtle; her stylist Erin Walsh just perfected her look.
The actress gained attention at Cannes wearing a beautiful white sequined Armani Privé dress and a Gucci mini dress with statement sunglasses. At one point, she also played with Valentino blush, and for the premiere of WeCrashed, she wore a very tight David Koma dress.
She exuded confidence every time. Hathaway seems to be in a new phase with her personal style, and we can’t wait to see where it takes her next.
Another star to impress in Venice this year was Jodie Turner-Smith, who has become a darling on the fashion scene by wearing bright colors, unexpected silhouettes and diverse brands, and enjoying the joy that clothing can bring.
Her red carpet looks this year included an absolutely spot on Met Gala outfit (she wore “Gilded Glamor in a beaded fringed leotard and full Gucci skirt”), the most colorful Venice Film Festival wardrobe we’ve ever seen (rainbow gowns by Christopher John Rogers, a custom-made bright blue from Harbison and a denim ballgown from Balmain, and ended the year as hostess of the Fashion Awards, where she took to the stage in a variety of glamorous outfits, including a glamorous green Gucci.
Overall, Turner-Smith fashion has been a treat to watch in 2022.
It’s been a big year for Florence Pugh, who starred in some of the year’s most high-profile films – which means she had plenty of press to take on, and there’s no denying she did it in style.
It seems like the British actress easily found her style, attending every event with such confidence. Her style is so unapologetically hers – it’s often girly (she loves cute taffeta dresses), but there’s always something about what she wears, whether it’s slicked back hair, dark makeup, or vampire accessories.
The look with which she has made the most headlines perfectly underscores this. Pugh wore a pink Barbie Valentino dress at the house’s fashion show in July; it was girly, airy and made of tulle, but it was also completely transparent. When the trolls decided to criticize her “two cute nipples”, she had the perfect answer.
“My mission in this industry has always been to say ‘fuck it and fuck it’ whenever someone expects my body to turn into an opinion on what’s hot or sexually attractive… Grow up. Respect people. Respect the bodies. Respect everything. women. Respect people.
It’s impossible to talk about celebrity style in 2022 without mentioning Rihanna. The singer – who announced her first pregnancy in predictable, glamorous style in January – has completely torn up the maternity style rulebook, paving the way for pregnant women around the world to dress exactly how they please.
During pregnancy, Rihanna opted for wearing transparent, tight or tight sets that did not hide her body. While perhaps this shouldn’t be considered particularly groundbreaking in 2022, and she’s certainly not the only celebrity to eschew traditional maternity fashion in recent years, her commitment to showing the world her changing body and embracing her sexuality during pregnancy is definitely something to be famous for.
From sheer Dior négligée to crop tops and low-rise jeans, Rihanna maintained her personal style throughout her pregnancy and paved the way for all of us to do the same.
She may have split opinions on her final outfit of 2022 – her highly 90s-inspired denim dress at the Jingle Bell Ball – but Katie Holmes remains one of our favorite celebrities when it comes to streetwear and front row style.
Since being photographed greeting a taxi in this Khaite cardigan (and matching bra) a few years ago, Holmes has become known for her nonchalant approach to dressing, always looking impeccably dressed but always very relaxed. This year we saw her mastering a white suit and hooded gown for Fashion Week while she continues to excel at dressing discreetly, pairing ballet flats with wide-leg jeans and skin-on-skin hugging.
