Now that we’ve all reluctantly returned to work after the holiday season, many of us are already looking forward to the next break.

Thanks to the coronation of King Charles III, we also gained an extra day off from work in 2023 – bravo for more free time.

However, if you want to maximize your time off in 2023 by cleverly booking your annual holiday around this year’s national holidays, you can get 48 days off for the price of 19.

Yes, really – there is an annual leave booking hack that is very simple to follow and seriously pays off.

This trick works for people in England and Wales who work Monday to Friday – here’s how to do it for yourself.

First, here are the bank holidays in 2023:

Public holidays in the UK 2023

Monday, January 2 – New Year’s Day

Friday, April 7 – Good Friday

Monday April 10 – Easter Monday

Monday, May 1 – a day off from work in early May

Monday, May 8 – King’s Coronation Day

Monday, May 29 – Spring Festival

When to book annual leave in 2023

Actual holidays: 10 (April 1-10)

Annual leave days booked: 4

10 days off for the price of four? We’ll take it.

First, book four days off before Good Friday.

You get two days off weekend, four days of annual leave you have booked, then four days weekend thanks to Good Friday and Easter Monday.

Early May Bank Holiday/King Charles’ Coronation

Actual holidays: 10 (April 29 – May 8)

Annual leave days booked: 4

Using the same format as Easter, book four days off between May 2 and May 5. You’ll have the weekend off before an early bank holiday, four days off, then a three-day weekend off – voila, ten days off for the price of four.

End of May/June

Actual holidays: 9 (May 27 – June 4)

Annual leave days booked: 4

The third public holiday in May falls on Monday 29th. By booking the days off May 30th and 31st and June 1st and 2nd, you will enjoy a free weekend before and enjoy nine days off with four days off.

Actual holidays: 9 (August 26 – September 3)

Annual leave days booked: 4

Using the same annual leave booking format as for the end of May, add four days of annual leave after the August bank holiday and you get another nine days off.

Actual holidays: 10 (December 23 – January 1)

Annual leave days booked: 3

Yes, a whole 10 days off in a row to book three days of vacation – some would say a Christmas miracle.

It’s all because of when Christmas lands this year. Christmas 2023 is Monday and Boxing Day is Tuesday. January 1st also falls on a Monday, which gives us plenty of opportunities to make smart use of our annual leave.

By booking a holiday from Wednesday December 27th to Friday December 29th, you will enjoy ten days off from Saturday December 23rd to Monday January 1st.
