Introverts reveal that hybrid work makes them feel overwhelmed

Working in a hybrid environment? You may prefer to start your working week in the office. That’s according to a recent survey of 2,002 employees, which found that 46% of hybrid workers prefer to start their week at the company’s headquarters, compared with just 20% who prefer the comfort of their couch. Regardless of where people work, it was also found that Monday was the most productive day of the week (28%), especially among introverts (39%). Survey conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Canon USA, Inc. with the launch of AMLOS (Activate My Line Of Sight), an office solution for hybrid work, revealed the challenges employees face in communicating with colleagues and how they vary by personality type. Has hybrid work helped improve employees’ communication skills? Almost two-thirds (65%) of people who split their time between home and office seem to think so, with more introverts than extroverts (82% vs. 62%). But while 88% of introverts said the hybrid work environment made them feel like they could come out of their shell, they were more likely than extroverts to find the working model overwhelming (80% vs. 64%). Regardless of where they work, many introverts chose a lack of feedback or communication as their biggest daily obstacle (32%), while for many extroverts the biggest barrier was having too many communication channels (21%). Overall, nine out of ten employees felt that speaking up at work was difficult, and nearly two-thirds shared this view when working remotely. Among the reasons? Everyone talks at the same time (47%), prefers visual or textual communication (43%), and doesn’t see co-workers at the same time (40%). Video seems to have played an integral role in improving interactions between colleagues as well as increasing productivity. Eight out of ten people who turn on video while working (1,722 respondents) said meetings are more productive when everyone else does too. Many respondents also said they find it easier to interact with co-workers when they can share documents, images and videos in a real-time meeting (66%) and see all meeting participants (58%). “As technology continues to advance, employers need to keep employees engaged,” said Kohei Maeda, head of communications. Seven in ten (70%) of respondents agreed that new tech tools such as apps and software can improve communication at work. “Companies should equip employees with technology that can improve interaction and allow everyone to be equally involved in meetings. When everyone is on the same page, regardless of location, they can not only feel that they are physically present on the team, but also have greater opportunities to contribute,” Maeda added.
