Martin Lewis warns UK broadband and mobile customers to ‘Act NOW’ over price hike

Martin Lewis, who hosts ITV’s popular show The Money Show, has warned customers of a “huge” increase in broadband and mobile prices in April.

In an email from money-saving expert Martin Lewis, “My heart sank last Wednesday when the latest CPI inflation of 10.5% was announced,” adding that this is what broadband and mobile companies base their price increases on.

A financial journalist pointed out that many companies go beyond “most” adding an extra 3% to 4%.

The savings expert then revealed the biggest increases announced in the past seven days, with BT and EE topping the list.

Here are the broadband and mobile companies that announced the highest price increases according to Money Saving Expert:

  • Broadband and mobile BT: 14.4%

  • EE broadband and mobile: 14.4%

  • Plusnet broadband and mobile: 14.4%

  • Shell broadband and mobile: up to 13.5%

  • Sky Mobile: 9% for no contract.

  • TalkTalk Broadband: 14.2% unless fixed price plus tariff.

  • Three broadband and mobile services: 4.5%/14.4% depending on the date of registration.

  • Vodafone: to be confirmed.

It has been pointed out that 16 million people in the UK have no contracts, so they can leave without being penalized for doing so.

However, it was noted that for those still on contract, moving could be more of a problem, but they should take action after their contract expires.

The cheapest broadband and line rental deals for new customers

  • Shell energyThe deal ends Sunday at 23:59 and offers 11Mbps/month for “£14.08/month” and 38Mbps/month for “£16.92/month” on an 18-month deal with prices that won’t increase in April (although they may in April next year).

  • Virgin media offers 132MB for “£18.40 a month” on an 18-month contract with no price increases, meaning you can leave without penalty if your contract changes.

  • Sky it also gives you 59MB for “£18.89/month” on an 18-month contract with no price increases.

Mobile offers available to new customers

  • Lebara offers 5GB per month for “£3.38 per month”. Customers paid 85p a month for six months, then paid £5.90 a month, and users could cancel at any time.

  • iD Mobile gives new customers 15GB for “£3.84 a month”, with customers paying £8 a month, but can also claim a £50 Amazon, Currys or Uber Eats voucher, equivalent to £3.38 a month under 12 -monthly contract.

  • Mobile phone: New customers can get 100GB a month for £9.87 a month by paying £11.95 and qualifying for a £25 Amazon voucher.

  • Three gives you unlimited data for “£15.54/month”. Under this deal, customers pay £17 a month, then £19.45 a month from April. However, new users will receive an automatic cashback of £42.
