Microsoft (MSFT) is betting on ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) technology that could power a new search engine that could disrupt Google’s (GOOG) dominance.

News website Semafor reported on Tuesday that Microsoft would invest $10bn (£8.2bn) in OpenAI, the artificial intelligence firm that launched its ChatGPT AI generation tool in November 2022.

This will see the San Francisco-based company valued at $29 billion, and industry analysts say Google should pay close attention to the deal.

Microsoft spends billions of dollars every year trying to compete with Google’s search engine dominance, but with relatively low user interaction on Bing, they’ve been failing for more than a decade.

Microsoft has so far failed to replicate the algorithm that powers Google Search, but if they incorporate ChatGPT’s AI generation power into Bing or a new search engine, it could be a “game changer,” an industry commentator suggested.

Enterprise Web3 expert Filippo Chisari told Yahoo Finance UK: “I believe Microsoft is most likely looking to build a search engine that will give them a competitive advantage over others.

“My experience with Microsoft is that if they invest in something that isn’t a regional effort, it’s usually a game changer, look at Linkedin.

“As you know, Google is already losing ‘search market share’ to younger crowds as they turn to TikTok for content searches and soon to Youtube as they evangelize their ‘Shorts’ feature.”

He added: “I think Microsoft saw an opportunity to rebuild a failed tool, and ChatGPT adds an extra layer of user friendliness to the search process, where I believe they are trying to take the battle, UX/UI approach. “

Bing already uses the older version of GPT to provide users with automatic search suggestions.

GPT was integrated with Bing after investing $1 billion in the California startup in 2019.

So Microsoft has been quietly supporting users since implementation.

Searching while using an AI generator would be a paradigm shift in how people use the internet as ChatGPT is more than just dynamically searching and learning information. Instead, this new technology claims to be able to create what you want in seconds.

What is OpenAI and ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an AI application with a wide range of articulations. He is able to create haiku, jokes, corporate emailsbusiness plans, fix computer codewrite academic essayand even a piece of original fiction in the style of any writer, from Joyce and Dostoyevsky to Shakespeare.

Many expressed concern that new technology could make human creativity redundant.

To get a measure of ChatGPT’s disruptive potential, Yahoo Finance UK asked the AI itself.

When asked how disruptive this new technology is to human creativity, the AI app said: “ChatGPT has the potential to disrupt human creativity, depending on how it is used.

“It’s important to remember that ChatGPT’s output is only as good as its input, so people should be careful to provide clear, thoughtful prompts to get the most out of it.

“Additionally, ChatGPT can never replace a person’s creative thinking process, so it should be seen as a tool, not a replacement for creative thinking.”

This new app could mean that users no longer need to search for information or even think, plan or design what they want. All the user has to do is tell ChatGPT what to write and, given a few tweaks and parameters, wait for a satisfactory final result.

The app can also write for any audience, parameters can be set to write for a five-year-old or for a niche audience of specific disciplines.

If Microsoft Bing is supported by the latest version of ChatGPT, Google may need to escalate the development of an alternative AI generator that can power its own search engine.

Google is exploring using similar technologies, such as its own LaMDA system, to support its search engine.

However, Google executives warned at a December 2022 meeting that AI “could be making things up” and could pose a serious threat to the company’s reputation.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request from Yahoo Finance UK for comment.
