Mitchell explodes with career-high 71 points in Cavaliers victory, Nets win 12th in a row

Donovan Mitchell broke the Cleveland Cavaliers record with 71 points in a 145-134 home win over the Chicago Bulls.

The Cavaliers’ previous record for most points in a single game is held by Kyrie Irving and LeBron James, who both scored 57 points each with Cleveland uniforms in 2015 and 2017, respectively.

Mitchell also came in at a crucial moment late in the fourth quarter to force overtime after being fouled with three seconds left to lose three seconds. He took the first free kick before missing on the second and got his own attack rebound, which he used again to tie the game.

He defeated the Bulls 13–4 in overtime, finishing 22-of-34 from the field, 7-of-15 from depth, and 20-of-25 from the free throw line, adding 11 assists and eight rebounds.

Mitchell blew his own career highs out of the water, having never scored more than 46 points in a regular season game before, although he had games 57 and 51 in the 2020 Utah Jazz playoff series against the Denver Nuggets.

Scored or assisted on 99 of the Cavaliers’ 145 points – the second-highest scoring ever, second only to Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point performance in 1962, where he scored 104 points.

Mitchell joins Chamberlain, Kobe Bryant, Elgin Baylor, David Robinson, David Thompson and Devin Booker as the only players to reach 70 points.

That overshadowed Chicago’s DeMar DeRozan, who scored a team-high 44 points on 16-of-32 shooting with four assists and four steals.

LeBron carries the Lakers in vintage style

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James forced his team to a 121-115 win over the Charlotte Hornets in his second straight game with 40 points.

After scoring a season-high 47 points in his final game against the Atlanta Hawks on Friday, James nearly tied with Charlotte for a game-high 43 points while shooting 16-of-26 with 11 rebounds and six assists.

He was the only Lakers player to score more than 18 points, as Thomas Bryant played a strong supporting role, scoring 18 points (nine-of-17 shooting) and 15 rebounds.

The Lakers have now won three of the last four and improved their record to 16-21 – four games behind the Sacramento Kings (19-16) in sixth place in the Western Conference.

Nets are 12 in a row

The Brooklyn Nets have the longest winning streak of the season after a 12th straight game, beating the San Antonio Spurs 139-103.

Both of Brooklyn’s offensive centers were at the top of their game. Kevin Durant scored 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting and 11 assists, while Kyrie Irving scored 27 on 11-of-14.

The climax of the game came when Irving smashed offensive rebounds from a Yuta Watanabe miss, rising to a surprising dunk that left Barclays Center fans in awe.

Brooklyn is now 25-12 after starting the season 1-5 and is one game ahead of the Boston Celtics (26-11) in the race for the league’s best record.
