Chelsea players pay tribute to Vialli

Jason Burt writes: “Chelsea players take to the pitch at the Etihad Stadium ahead of an FA Cup third round match. They are all wearing training shirts with the number nine on the back – in memory of one of their most valued centre-forwards, Gianluca Vialli, who sadly passed away on Friday.”

The most important breaking news….

…. Rain is forecast in Manchester.

To be honest, it’s also absolutely mean in London today. It brightened up in Cardiff, remember – although not for Leeds United.

FA Cup match preview

Good morning and welcome to our blog’s live coverage of the plum FA Cup third round draw. Chelsea go to Manchester City and at 15:30 we will have information about the team. We’ll also be following the fourth round draw at 4.05pm CET and you can follow it in more detail on the FA Cup fourth round draw blog here.

Chelsea have an impressive record in this competition recently, having reached five of the last six finals. Remember that only one of them won. Man City, given their primacy in league football, have a surprisingly poor record of late: they beat Watford 6-0 in the 2019 final, but you have to go back to 2013 to see their previous performance when they lost to Wigan. Clearly not a top priority for Pep Guardiola, but it’s still a bit of a curiosity.

For a beleaguered Graham Potter, the FA Cup could be the road to salvation or the next nail in the coffin. Potter says he believes in the long-term effectiveness of his methods, but a) Mandy Rice-Davies is applying, and he would say so, wouldn’t he? and b) it’s more about whether Todd Boehly believes. Wallace himself analyzes the situation here.

Is Graham Potter right to believe in a new Chelsea? Todd Boehly will answer

For Pep, it’s just one more game they start as hot favourites. He says everyone expects them to win all the time. Boo and indeed moreover hoo. However, if you want to read more about it, put down the world’s smallest violin and follow this link.

Pep Guardiola: Arsenal and Manchester United don’t have the same burden of expectations as City

As always with the biggest teams in FA Cup matches, it remains to be seen which players they will replace. Full strength? half strength? The full strength of Capstan?

Guardiola said midfielder Kalvin Phillips has “improved his level” but needs to be in top form all year, having learned a valuable lesson after being rejected for returning overweight from the World Cup.

Phillips only played 40 minutes for England as a substitute in the final. He has yet to start a game for City after moving from Leeds United last season due to a shoulder injury.

Guardiola publicly criticized Phillips for being overweight after leaving him out of City’s squad for a League Cup win over Liverpool on 22 December.

“Perhaps this will be a good lesson for him for the future. I have the impression that a player has to be perfect for 12 months,” said Guardiola. “Even on holidays you have to be perfect.

“You can enjoy and do whatever you want, but you have to be ready because this level is very challenging. To play every three days you have to be in shape, and if you’re not in shape, nothing. He improved his level last week.”
