Shailene Woodley had the “hardest time” of her life while filming “Three Women”.

Shailene Woodley said she went through the “darkest, hardest time” of her life while filming the upcoming series.

The 31-year-old Big Little Lies actress stars in Three Women, which explores women’s lives through sex and relationships.

Speaking to Net-A-Porter’s digital title Porter about filming the Showtime series between October 2021 and May 2022, Woodley said, “It was hard to shoot because I was going through the darkest, hardest time of my life; it was winter in New York and my personal life was shitty, so for eight months I felt like a giant bubble of pain.

“I was so grateful that at least I could go to work and cry and process my emotions through my character.”

Woodley, also known for the Divergent film series and the romantic drama The Fault in Our Stars, confirmed that she became engaged to American football quarterback Aaron Rodgers in February 2021.

The following year, in March, People magazine reported that they had split up.

Discussing social media, Woodley also told Porter, “Honestly, it never really struck me that millions of people around the world actually watch and pay attention to these things.

“Then I was dating someone in America who was very, very famous. It was the first time I had a “famous” relationship quoted and I watched (this) review, opinions, desire for people to know my life, his life and our lives – it just felt violating in a way that was fun before.”

Showtime said Three Women, which also includes appearances from She’s Gotta Have It’s DeWanda Wise, Betty Gilpin of GLOW and Gabrielle Creevy of In My Skin, is about “a haunting depiction of American female desire” and three women “on a crash course to radically overthrow your lives.”

Woodley said she was “very moved” by the exploration of sex and intimacy while reading Lisa Taddeo’s novel of the same name, which won an award at the 2020 British Book Awards and became a bestseller.

“At a very young age, I was obsessed with sex and intimacy and the way we as Americans relate to it,” she added.

She also said she was “frustrated” with supposedly empowering stories for women that don’t actually help women.

Woodley added, “The conversation I had with Lisa was about this; we’re not trying to make a show that defends women around the world to become the best versions of themselves – it’s a show that simply validates the reality that women face.
