Spurs “needed a performance like this” – Conte breathed a sigh of relief after beating Palace

Antonio Conte believes Tottenham “needed this kind of performance” as they won for the first time in three matches, beating Crystal Palace 4-0.

Spurs went into Wednesday’s match after a 2-2 draw with Brentford and a 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa, with questions about Conte’s future raised after he appeared to publicly question the club’s direction.

But a Harry Kane double and goals from Matt Doherty and Son Heung-min gave Spurs a decisive victory at Selhurst Park to put them two points short of the Premier League top four.

Conte breathed a sigh of relief after the match, ending a winless streak and scoring three valuable points, telling reporters: “There are times when you need these types of performances.

“It was important. three points, [we] not lose a goal. It wasn’t easy. Playing away against Crystal Palace is not easy. They beat us 3-0 last season [at Selhurst Park]. [It is] really hard playing field.

“I have many things to enjoy, especially when it comes to young players. We have a difficult situation, especially with injured players. I am glad that you can count on them. It’s also important because we can create competition.”

Kane’s brace took him to 264 goals for Spurs, within two of tying Jimmy Greaves as the club’s record goalscorer.

Conte singled out the striker’s leadership as one of his best attributes, saying: “We’re talking about a truly world-class striker who will break this record with goals.

“For us, it is an important reference point. Especially in moments where you know Harry is ready to fight and solve situations with goals and assists.

“We must continue like this and face every situation, negative and positive, with great character.

“Hopefully we can have a full squad soon and it will be very important to face Arsenal and Manchester City with all our players and then we can see our true level.”

Bryan Gil impressed against Palace on his third Premier League appearance of the season after coming under fire for a poor performance against Villa.

Conte has high hopes for the 21-year-old, stating: “It was important. We are talking about a player born to play football. He understands football so quickly, he is so smart.

“This league is very difficult. Quality, you need to be fast and have stamina. He has it, and you also need to be physically strong. Gil has improved in that aspect since last season.”
