Tire Nichols – Live: Family says body camera video shows Memphis police beating him like Rodney King before dying

The family of Tire Nichols, a Memphis man who died days after being arrested and beaten by city police, spoke out after viewing footage of the incident.

Nichols, 29, died on January 10, three days after a roadside stop escalated into a confrontation with officers that left him hospitalized.

Family members and their lawyers met with Memphis police and reviewed the video on Monday before it was released.

Civil rights activist Ben Crump called the video “scary, shameful, brutal and embarrassing”.

“We’re seeing evidence of what’s happening to black and brown people from simple roadside stops,” said Crump. “You shouldn’t die from a simple traffic stop.”

“Unfortunately, it reminded us of the Rodney King video,” added Crump.

Attorney Antonio Romanucci described Nichols as a “human piñata” as he was beaten. Five officers, all of whom were black, were fired from the department in the aftermath of the incident.

“It is not the race of the police officer that determines the amount of force, but the race of the citizen,” said Crump. on Monday. “…It’s about black and brown citizens who receive undue force from police officers, whether they are black, white or brown, and this must stop.”
